Abstract: Human microbiome, the collective genome of the microbial community that is on and within us,has recently been mapped with sequencing technologies. Recent metagenomic studies have shown that the vaginal microbiome varies among reproductive age women. Moreover, during pregnancy, vaginal microbiome may also change with hormonal fluctuations. Pregnancy complications, such as preeclampsia and premature birth, were also associated with microbiome dysbiosis. This review provides a brief overview on observations pertaining to both variation and the presumptive potential role of a varied microbiome during pregnancy, the effects of dysbacteriosis on major pregnancy complications and the usage of next-generation sequencing technology as a means to investigate the microbiome.
