Abstract:

Objective To investigate the relationship between oxidative stress and blood lipid metabolism in schizophrenia. Methods Serum total cholesterol(TC),triglyceride(TG),superoxide dismutase(SOD),glutathione(GSH) and malondialdehyde(MDA) were determined in 50 patients with schizophrenia and 49 healthy subjects(healthy control group). Serum TC>5.72 mmol/L and serum TG>1.7 mmol/L meant blood lipid levels elevated, patients who had normal serum TC or normal serum TG were excluded, and schizophrenia patients were classified into normal blood lipid group(24 cases) and hyperlipemia group(17 cases). Results Comparing with healthy control group, serum levels of TC,TG and MDA in schizophrenia group were higher (P<0.05),serum SOD and GSH levels decreased (P<0.05). The serum levels of SOD,GSH and MDA between normal blood lipid group and hyperlipemia group had no statistical significance (P>0.05).Conclusions Schizophrenia patients have dyslipidemia inducing cardiovascular diseases and oxidative stress injury. The relationship between oxidative stress and blood lipid metabolism in schizophrenia should be researched further.
