Additive effect of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 in the treatment of depression

Abstract:

Objective To investigate the relationship of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D₃ [25（OH）D₃] in the treatment of depression and Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression（HAMD） score,and to evaluate the role of serum 25（OH）D₃ in the treatment of depression. Methods A total of 108 patients with depression were randomly classified into observation group（54 cases） and control group（54 cases）. All patients were given antidepressant Pa Rossi Dean regularly,and the observation group was given vitamin D₃ as well. The analysis of HAMD score was performed for all the patients before treatment and after treatment for 1,3,5 and 7 weeks. The levels of serum 25（OH）D₃ in the 2 groups were determined. Results After treatment for 3,5 and 7 weeks,the levels of serum 25（OH）D₃ in observation group were higher than that in control group（P<0.05）. After treatment for 5 and 7 weeks,HAMD scores in observation group were lower than that in control group（P<0.05）. HAMD score and serum 25（OH）D₃ in observation group had a negative correlation（r=-0.97,P<0.01）. Conclusions For patients with depression,taking vitamin D on the basis of conventional antidepressants can improve the effectiveness of depression treatment. Serum 25（OH）D₃ can be used as a potential indicator of depression efficacy monitoring.
